Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Michael Goulding suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg Thursday while at the Scott Park shooting range, said Toledo police Lt. Kevan Toney, a department spokesman.
Judge Goulding went to holster a weapon during a firearms qualification at the shooting range when the gun fired, striking him in the leg, Lieutenant Toney said.
The incident happened at about 2 p.m. Thursday.
A range officer applied first aid to Judge Goulding and the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene.
The judge was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio hospital, for injuries that were not life-threatening.
Roger Kerner, director of court deputies, said none of the common pleas judges carries firearms in the courthouse.
Common Pleas Judge Gene Zmuda, administrative judge for the court, was out of town Thursday. He said he was notified about the incident but had no further details.
Judge Goulding, a Republican, was appointed to the Lucas County Common Pleas bench by Gov. John Kasich in August, 2013, to fill a vacancy created by the departure of Judge James Jensen, who was elected to Ohio's 6th District Court of Appeals.
Judge Goulding ran with no opposition in 2014 to fill the remaining two years of Judge Jensen's term and again ran unopposed for a full six-year term on the bench in November, 2016.
A 1995 graduate of the University of Toledo's College of Law, Judge Goulding was a Toledo Municipal Court judge from 2007 to 2013.
