The Lucas County Republican and Democratic parties have recommended new members to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted for appointment to the Lucas County Board of Elections.
The Republican Party’s executive committee voted Monday night to recommend Mark Davis, an Ottawa Hills lawyer and five-time unsuccessful judicial candidate, to replace Republican Mark Wagoner, Sr., for a new four-year term.
Also up at the end of February is the term of Democrat John Irish. The Lucas County Democratic Party executive committee nominated county Chairman Joshua Hughes to that seat. Mr. Hughes, 39, an Oregon lawyer, lost his re-election effort on Oregon City Council in November.
Secretary of State Jon Husted must appoint board members for both terms. The law requires him to accept the local party’s recommended candidate unless he deems the candidate not competent for the position.
Mr. Wagoner was appointed in 2014 after Mr. Husted fired three of the four board members for what he called a “culture of chaos” in the elections agency. Mr. Irish had been appointed in 2012, and was the one board member not fired by Mr. Husted.
