Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson gained the political backing of the United Auto Workers union for her re-election, her campaign said Wednesday.
The campaign said it received a unanimous endorsement from the UAW Toledo Area CAP Council this week. The council says it represents 20,000 active and retired workers connected with UAW locals in the area.
“I’m proud to support working families everyday. Toledo’s workers are some of the hardest working folks you’ll ever meet. I’m thankful they have my back,” Ms. Hicks-Hudson said in a campaign release. “Members of the UAW see the investment by General Motors, the rebirth of downtown and all the new construction in Toledo.”
UAW Local 14 President Ray Wood said, “This is all happening on the mayor’s watch. She’s not one to toot her own horn, but her hard work speaks for itself.”
Locals participating in the CAP Council include 12, 14, 1435, 2213, 3056, 4444, and 5242, which represent autoworkers, nurses, administrators, librarians, clerks, and corrections officers.
Ms. Hicks-Hudson was endorsed last week by the Lucas County Democratic Party and in January by the Ohio Democratic Party.
She faces potential opposition from Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz, a fellow Democrat; Toledo Councilman Tom Waniewski and retired Toledo firefighter Jeffery Cook, both Republicans, and others.
