SANDUSKY — Cedar Point amusement park, which retired its Mantis stand-up roller coaster earlier this month, said today that it will replace the ride with a new coaster, the Rougarou, which will debut in 2015 and feature a floorless train.
The park said the Rougarou, which in French folklore is a terrifying werewolf-like creature, will reach speeds of 60 mph while riders’ feet dangle inches above the track and murky waters below.
The new ride will utilize the structure and track of the former Mantis, which opened in 1996 and locked riders into a standing position. Cedar Point decommissioned the Mantis on Labor Day.
In announcing Rougarou, Cedar Point officials also added this it will debut at the same time as the newly-renovated Hotel Breakers, which located along the park’s mile-long beach.
The hotel has been modernized to include a new entrance portal, classic interior finishes, newly-furnished and remodeled rooms with LCD TV’s, new furniture, bedding and décor, and other amenities.
The Breakers also is adding a Starbucks coffee bar and a Surf Lounge bar inside its rotunda. It will have wider exterior green space with panoramic views of Lake Erie and an outdoor water play area with zero-depth entry and splash features.
