The first CVS Pharmacy in Sylvania opened today, ahead of schedule, adding to the drug stores concentrated in the area.
The CVS Pharmacy, a 13,000-square foot building at 7510 Sylvania Ave. at the corner of King Road, was scheduled to open in November. But last week the pharmacy chain said the store would open today. There is a Kroger pharmacy across Sylvania Avenue, there is a Rite Aid store a mile to the south and a mile to the east, and a Meijer pharmacy about a mile to the south.
The new store opened without a requested liquor permit. Last month, Sylvania City Council objected to the store receiving a liquor permit from the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control, citing its proximity to Southview High School as a concern. Council has requested a hearing regarding the permit request.
CVS spokesman Mike DeAngelis said the hearing is set for early October.
The pharmacy chain was in Toledo years ago and pulled out of the area more than a decade ago.
However, it began opening stores in the Toledo area last year. Unlike the CVS store at 4121 Monroe St. in Toledo, which is open 24 hours, this store is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
With the opening of the drug store, there are at least five other pharmacy stores within a three to four mile radius of it.
The Sylvania store is a free-standing one-story building and has a drive-through window. A single-story office building had been on the site but it was torn down.
