WAUSEON -- Secretary of State Jon Husted has requested an investigation by the Ohio Attorney General into potential voter fraud by a Fulton County man who allegedly voted in both Ohio and South Carolina in the 2008 and 2010 elections.
Mr. Husted said Friday he was referring the case to the Ohio Attorney General for review and possible prosecution.
The Fulton County Board of Elections notified the secretary of state’s office after discovering that the suspect, who has been registered to vote in Ohio since 2006, has the same name and personal information as a voter who has been a registered and active voter in South Carolina since 2002. This individual may have cast ballots in the 2008 and 2010 general elections in both states, and the board is looking into whether he may also have voted in both states’ primary elections this year.
“We take any hint of voter fraud very seriously,” Mr. Husted said. “It is critical to the integrity of our voting system that legitimate voters’ ballots are not being diluted by those seeking to game the system.”
Fulton County Deputy Elections Director Kandice Lemley said the man voted in the 2012 primary in Ohio, but said she could not say which party’s ballot he voted.
Voting in two states in the same election is a fourth-degree felony under Ohio law.
The board has been working with South Carolina elections officials to get more information about this individual’s voting history, according to the Ohio Secretary of State’s office.
