Member of Marines dies after gunfire on Michigan island

DRUMMOND ISLAND, Mich. — State police say two federal agents were helping search for a missing member of the U.S. Marines when they exchanged gunfire with him on northern Michigan’s Drummond Island.

Hours later Thursday, state police found 38-year-old Aaron Andrew Furness of Woodbridge, Virginia, dead inside a remote cabin. Police say Friday the cause is under investigation.

Police say Furness was reported missing Wednesday and was believed to be in the area. Around 2:30 a.m., agents from U.S. Border Patrol discovered footprints and tracked them to a cabin. They were shot at and took cover while returning gunfire.

Police say Furness retreated into the cabin and was found dead inside.

The island is in Lake Huron in Chippewa County’s Drummond Township, about 50 miles southeast of Sault. Ste. Marie.
