Niles, Ohio mayor hospitalized after mold found in City Hall

NILES, Ohio — A northeast Ohio mayor has been hospitalized after toxic mold spores were found in his City Hall office.

The (Warren) Tribune-Chronicle reports Niles Mayor Tom Scarnecchia was hospitalized Thursday after showing symptoms of an illness linked to mold.

Scarnecchia told the newspaper he’d been feeling sick for about two weeks. Recent heavy rains caused water damage to City Hall, including the area above Scarnecchia’s desk.

City Councilman Barry Steffey says the city has isolated areas where the mold has formed. He says the mold can’t be completely removed until the City Hall roof is repaired.

Employees in the mayor’s and city auditor’s offices have been moved to new locations while those areas are cleaned.

Steffey says the city isn’t aware of anyone else sickened by mold.
