M-50 bridge in Dundee closed due to flooding

DUNDEE, Mich. — Michigan officials closed the M-50 bridge in downtown Dundee on Friday evening because of River Raisin flooding.

Ohio officials said a major Williams County road closed earlier by flooding had reopened Friday, while another remained closed and others were being watched.

MDOT said the Dundee bridge had closed at 5:30 p.m. Friday and would remain closed pending an “appreciable reduction in water levels.

“Until barricades are removed, no traffic is permitted to use the bridge,” the department said. A posted detour will use U.S. 23, Ida West Road, and Lewis Avenue.

The village of Dundee had announced earlier in the day that the bridge was closing, but then withdrew that announcement and said MDOT was monitoring the situation.

The village planned to station emergency crews on both sides of the bridge during any closing to maintain response coverage.

As of 4 p.m., the National Weather Service office in White Lake, Mich., said the Raisin was at 649.5 feet in Dundee, half a foot below its 650-foot flood stage, and rising. The Raisin was expected to rise to a crest right at flood stage Friday night, the weather service said in a late-afternoon flood warning for the river.

The M-50 bridge has closed several times previously during similar river conditions.

Flood warnings also remained in effect for the Raisin at Blissfield and Monroe and for the Maumee and several tributaries in northwest Ohio.

As of 4 p.m., the Raisin was 0.6 feet above its 683-foot flood stage in Blissfield and slowly falling. The weather service said the river should fall below flood stage there Saturday morning. In Monroe, meanwhile, the river was 0.4 feet above its 9-foot flood stage and steady, with return to within its banks expected Sunday morning.

The weather service said scattered light rain showers across the region late Saturday and early Sunday “would only slightly slow the fall of the rivers.” Numerous other rivers across lower Michigan were in various degrees of flooding — some of them severe — on Friday.

In Ohio, meanwhile, U.S. 20A remained closed at its bridge over the Tiffin River in Fulton County, but U.S. 20 reopened Friday afternoon at its bridge over the St. Joseph River near Pioneer in Williams County, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The National Weather Service office in North Webster, Ind., said Tiffin River flooding near Stryker, Ohio, was high enough to threaten parts of State Rts. 34 and 191 nearby, but, as of Friday evening, ODOT spokesman Rebecca Dangelo said those roads were still open.

The weather service continued to describe flooding on both the Tiffin and St. Joseph rivers as “moderate.” As of Friday morning, the Tiffin was still rising at Stryker but the St. Joseph had crested at Montpelier and was falling from about 2.8 feet above flood stage.

As of early Friday, forecasters continued to predict minor flooding along upper portions of the Maumee River, but the flood warning for the Maumee at Waterville had ended. Flood warnings for the Maumee were expected to remain in effect until Tuesday afternoon near Napoleon and until Wednesday afternoon near Defiance.
