He's a former anchor in his hometown of Flint, Mich., and is an Emmy Award winner for his reporting.
The University of Michigan graduate also has been recognized several times by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
Top NBC anchorman Brian Williams will host the next Meet the Press but the network hasn't chosen who will permanently replace Tim Russert, an NBC News spokesman said yesterday.
NBC News will announce the guests for the show with Williams today.

Javier Bardem has won Spain's 2008 national film award, an honor given annually by the Culture Ministry.
Bardem was selected for the $46,500 prize for "goals achieved throughout a long career."
The ministry, in a statement Wednesday, highlighted the 39-year-old actor's "defense of the acting profession and a constant commitment to Spanish cinema."
Bardem won a best supporting actor Oscar for No Country for Old Men. His screen credits also include Before Night Falls.
Rascal Flatts will play with the Boston Pops during a July 4 concert to be broadcast on CBS.
The country music group says they will play some of their hits with the Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart. Rascal Flatts' hits include "Take Me There," "What Hurts the Most," "Bless the Broken Road."
