Weekday anchor Viviana Hurtado, an award-winning journalist who most recently worked at ABC News, and was part of the Al Jazeera English launch team in 2006 as the network’s North America correspondent, joined the WTOL-WUPW newsroom Oct. 1. Hurtado will co-anchor the 6:30 p.m. half-hour and 10 p.m. hour newscasts with Jerry Anderson.

Northwest Ohio native Emily Nelson was hired in late September as weekend anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. WTOL newscasts, and as an investigative reporter. Most recently she reported and anchored at WNEM-TV in Saginaw, Mich., and WDIV-TV in Detroit.

Danielle Dwyer, a general assignment reporter for WTOL and WUPW, also was hired late last month.

WTOL general manager Brian Lorenzen praised news director Anthony Knopp — who himself recently joined the WTOL-WUPW news team after several years at WTVG-TV, Channel 13 — and the hires.

“Anthony is doing a great job of identifying and securing talented people to join the WTOL/WUPW team,” Lorenzen said. “People like Viviana, Emily, Danielle ... and many other recent additions have brought diversity and experience which complement our existing group of professionals. The momentum inside the newsroom is strong and I’m happy with our progress.”
