The Toledo Volleyball Club's 14-1 Team recently earned a bid to compete in the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic National Championships.
The 14-1 Team won the Ohio Valley Region National Bid Tournament on April 14 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The local club beat out 26 other top 14-year-old girls teams.
The tournament included the top teams from Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and northern Kentucky. The team secured an entry bid into the Junior Olympic National Championships in Dallas in early July. The tournament will feature 48 of the best clubs from across the nation.
The TVC 14-1 Team improved its record to 34-2 at the event in Columbus.
The team is coached by John Buck, who has been at the helm of the powerful St. Ursula Academy program for 12 years.
The 10-member team consists of the following eighth grade girls: Katie Felix and Madison Strall (Our Lady of Perpetual Help); Shelly DeHenning, Kelsey Reiner and Jocelyn Uchic (St. Joan of Arc); Madison Haupricht and Erin Williams (St. Clement); Taylor Swint (Gesu), Emma Romstadt (St. Rose) and Cassidy Croci (St. Joseph of Sylvania).
The 14-1 Team defeated eight opponents in a best-of-three games format. Only one opponent forced a third game as the TVC swept the other seven foes in two games.
This victories propelled the TVC 14-1 Team to the No. 1 ranking in the Ohio Valley Region. It is currently first out of 245 regional teams.
Another team from the TVC also qualified for the national championships. The TVC 16-1 team secured a bid at the Northeast Qualifier in Baltimore on April 6.
The TVC 13-1 and TVC 18-1 finished sixth and seventh respectively at the qualifying tournaments. Other top 10 finishes for the TVC include the 16-Mizuno (eight place), 14-Mizuno (ninth) and 12-1 (ninth).
BOWLING: Bryan native Toby Sidle is ranked 15th in the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association.
Sidle, who is a senior at Saginaw Valley State, has a 202.7 average. Sidle leads the Saginaw Valley State team that has won three straight national championships.
RANKINGS: Three sports teams from Michigan high schools have garnered state recognition early in the spring season.
The Ida High School baseball team was ranked sixth in the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches poll. Ida is 3-0 and earned the sixth spot in the Division 3 poll.
The Summerfield High School softball team has achieved a No. 2 ranking in the state's Division 4 softball coaches poll.
The Bedford High School golf team also has earned recognition in Division I. The Mules are ranked 11th in the coaches poll.
CARDS: The 10th annual Chatgamers Live Euchre Party will be held July 18-19 in Monroe.
The tournament will be held at the Holiday Inn Express on North Dixie Highway. It is a cash payout event and is open to players ages 16 and up.
Four tournaments will be held. A progressive euchre tournament will take place Friday evening. A spades tournament will be held Saturday morning followed by euchre tournaments in the afternoon and evening.
