BGSU site offers glimpse into lives of past sailors

BOWLING GREEN — Genealogy-minded Ohioans may be able to find links to their seafaring family members in the new Great Lakes Maritime Personnel Online Database, part of Bowling Green State University’s historical collections of the Great Lakes.

More than 200,000 entries on the lives of about 30,000 people, mostly sailors, who worked in the lakes’ maritime trades between 1836 and 2003 are recorded in the database.

Preparation of the database, which can be found online at www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/hcgl, was funded by a grant from the Office of Coastal Management of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
