CHARLES W. DALEY, 1925-2006
Lawyer was active in volunteer work

LIMA, Ohio - Charles W. Daley, 80, a prominent local lawyer who volunteered for area religious, professional, and service organizations, died Monday in St. Rita's Medical Center here.

The family did not know the cause of death.

Mr. Daley, who began practicing law in Lima in 1953, was a partner in the law firm of Daley, Balyeat, Balyeat & Leahy in Lima.

In 2002, he served on a six-member board named by the Toledo Catholic Diocese to evaluate and make recommendations about allegations of sexual abuse.

Mr. Daley also was a director of the former Mid-Am Bank from 1991 until retiring in the mid 1990s. He previously served on the board of Citizens Loan and Building Co., a Lima-based affiliate of Mid-Am, from about 1970.

Mr. Daley was the attorney for the Allen Metropolitan Housing Authority in the 1970s and 1980s, was president of the Allen County Community Welfare Council in the 1960s, and served as president of the Allen County Bar Association in 1976.

He also was a longtime secretary for the Lima Civil Service Board in the 1960s and the 1970s.

Mr. Daley provided legal support and direction to numerous local nonprofit organizations.

His participation in area professional and service organizations also included the Ohio State Bar Association presidency in 1976 and longtime membership on the board of the Lima/ Allen Chamber of Commerce.

"He grew up in Lima and really wanted it to be the best place it could be. He gave of his time and his energy because he believed in Lima," his daughter Jennifer Brown said.

A native of Lima, Mr. Daley was a Lima St. Rose High School graduate.

He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati and a law degree from Ohio Northern University.

During World War II, Mr. Daley was an Army radio operator in Europe.

After the war, he finished law school and became a lawyer for the Solicitors Office in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1950. He then served as a lawyer with the rank of first lieutenant for the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate General Corps at the Pentagon in 1951 and 1952.

In 1949, Mr. Daley married Shirley Figgins. She died in 1998.

In his free time, Mr. Daley enjoyed playing tennis and badminton.

Mr. Daley was a longtime member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, Lima.

Surviving are his sons, Ed, Douglas, David, and Stephen; daughters, Maureen Hydaker, Pam Daley-Jennings, Kathleen Daley, Jennifer Brown, Jacque Daley-Perrin, and Stephanie Lambers; brother, Richard, and 18 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Charles Borromeo Church, Lima. Visitation will be at the Chamberlain Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, after 6 p.m. tomorrow.

The family suggests tributes to the Shirley J. Daley Community Fund in Lima.
