Priest with sex conviction loses teaching license
COLUMBUS — The Ohio Board of Education permanently revoked the teaching license yesterday of a former Toledo Roman Catholic priest convicted in 2003 of possessing child pornography.
Stephen G. Rogers, 58, a former religion teacher and associate pastor at Central Catholic High School, served 18 months of a 21-month federal prison sentence after his conviction. He is registered as a sex offender and has been barred from public ministry by the Toledo diocese.
Rogers agreed to voluntarily surrender his certificate. Two other priests suspended by the Toledo diocese — Robert J. Yeager and Joseph M. Schmelzer — also decided not to contest the revocation of their teaching certificates at a future date.
The state began taking action against the priests’ teaching certificates after The Blade began asking questions about their status. The Blade published a two-part series, “Licensed to Teach,” on Oct. 6 and 7 about priests in sex-abuse cases who have kept their teaching licenses.
