Toledo officer to be arraigned on drug charges
A veteran Toledo police officer is scheduled for arraignment today on drug-related charges after he was arrested Saturday for having cocaine and marijuana in his west end home.
Officer Bryan Traband, 36, is charged with felony drug abuse, possession of cocaine, and three misdemeanors - permitting drug abuse; drug abuse, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He and Timothy Mosakowski, 59, of 2930 Hartman St., were arrested at the officer's Mansfield Street home.
Mr. Mosakowski was charged with felony drug abuse, possession of cocaine. He was released from the Lucas County jail on a supervised recognizance bond after arraignment yesterday in Toledo Municipal Court.
Officer Traband, who joined the force in 1993, was booked into the jail and released on a supervised recognizance bond. He removed himself from the department's payroll, Capt. Diana Ruiz-Krause said.
Court records indicate Officer Traband had cocaine and marijuana and allowed Mr. Mosakowski and another man to ingest the drugs in his presence in his home.A search warrant indicates that a confidential source twice in mid-February provided information that the officer was involved in selling, possessing, and using marijuana and cocaine. On Thursday, the source said the officer would be having a party Friday at his home and have drugs there. The source recorded the officer using drugs on a covert audio/video device, the warrant states.
Dan Wagner, president of the Toledo Police Patrolman's Association, could not be reached for comment.
In May, Officer Traband received a 10-day suspension - of which he served two days and the other eight were held in abeyance - for conduct unbecoming and being in a traffic accident involving department vehicles.
He hit a police vehicle with his vehicle in the sally port at the jail and broke out a tail light. He took the damaged vehicle to the city garage, had the part changed, and didn't report the accident, Captain Ruiz-Krause said.
Since 2005, he's had two verbal reprimands for violating rules for use of department vehicles and a written reprimand for not searching a prisoner's ball cap, where a couple of steak knives were found, the captain said.
