DETROIT - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a one-time rising star and Detroit's youngest elected leader, was charged Monday with perjury and other counts after sexually explicit text messages contradicted his sworn denials of an affair with a top aide. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy also charged the popular yet polarizing 37-year-old mayor with obstruction of justice and misconduct in office. He could get up to 15 years in prison for perjury alone and would be automatically expelled from office if convicted.
WASHINGTON — The Justice Department on Monday approved Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.’s proposed $5 billion buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., saying the deal was unlikely to hurt competition or consumers. The deal was approved without conditions despite opposition from consumer groups and an intense lobbying campaign by the land-based radio industry. The combination still requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission.
King Road, near Sylvania Avenue in Sylvania, was closed to traffic and a nearby Kroger Store was evacuated Monday when a construction crew hit a natural gas line, causing a leak, authorities said. The incident left 17 area businesses, including the Kroger store, without service, said Chris Kozak, a Columbia Gas spokesman. Permanent Link
