Detroit council holds 3rd day of hearings into settlement
ASSOCIATED PRESS

DETROIT — A third day of Detroit City Council hearings into dealings behind an $8.4 million whistle-blowers' lawsuit settlement involving Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has started with testimony from a legal expert.

Wayne State University law school Dean Frank Wu was the first of the expected witnesses to appear Friday. City Corporation Counsel John Johnson was to testify later in the day about his role in the settlement.

Council members claim they were unaware of a confidential settlement agreement signed by Kilpatrick that contained references to sexually explicit text messages on the pager of his former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty.

Kilpatrick and Beatty face perjury, misconduct and other charges related to testimony they gave at last summer's whistle-blowers' trial.
