Sidelines: Buford set to play in Jordan all-star game

Libbey’s William Buford, who was named Ohio’s Mr. Basketball this season, is one of 22 prep All-America players who will compete Saturday in the Jordan Brand Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The9 p.m. game will be on ESPNU.

Buford will play for the Blue team along with his future Ohio State teammate, B.J. Mullens, a 7-foot-1 center from CanalWinchester.

Jordan Brand, a division of Nike, Inc., has played host to this all-star game since 2002. Highlighting the list of past participants are LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Amare Stoudemire, Dwight Howard and Kevin Durant, as well as some top current college players — Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina, Derrick Rose of Memphis, and Eric Gordon and D.J. White of Indiana.

The 6-foot-5 Buford played in the McDonald’s All-American game in Milwaukee last month, and was recently named to the 10-player Parade Magazine All-America first team.

Buford helped Libbey to a 24-3 record, a second straight City League championship, and a state runner-up finish in Division II.

He finished with 2,059 career points, second in CL history behind Jim Jackson, who tallied 2,328 for Macomber from 1985-89. Jackson was Ohio’s first Mr. Basketball (in 1988 and 1989), and also made the McDonald’s and Parade All-America teams after leading the Macmen to the 1989 Division I state championship.
