Zumaya heads to San Diego to meet Tigers for series
By JOE VARDON BLADE SPORTS WRITER
Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya is on his way to San Diego, where he said he will meet his teammates when they open a three-game series against the Padres Friday night.
Zumaya, who was on rehab assignment from offseason shoulder surgery with the Mud Hens, didn't pitch today as planned in the Hens' 5-4 victory over Syracuse. He threw a 14-pitch bullpen prior to today's noon game, showered, and left Fifth Third Field. On his way from the clubhouse, Zumaya told The Blade the Tigers "gave me the call and told me to meet them in San Diego." Zumaya, who is originally from southern California, said he was on his way to the airport. Zumaya made his fourth rehab appearance with the Hens Monday night, allowing an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts. Toledo pitching coach A.J. Sager said the Tigers called this morning and instructed the Hens not to pitch Zumaya in today's game, contrary to original plans. Zumaya allowed allowed three runs (one earned) and struck out four in four innings with Toledo. He has not pitched for the Tigers this season. Tigers outfielder Clete Thomas (sprained right foot) will also rejoin Detroit when it takes on the Padres. Thomas, who's been rehabbing with the Hens since Friday, went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts today. Also, Hens pitcher Anastacio Martinez, who pitched five innings today and recorded the victory, was sent to Double-A Erie after the game to make room for Aquilino Lopez. Lopez, optioned to Toledo to make room for Fernando Rodney, has yet to report to the Hens. When he does - likely for the start of an upcoming, eight-game road trip - he'll work his way into the starting rotation.
