A Rwandan national convicted of assaulting a woman at the University of Toledo library and a mentally impaired teenage boy at the Anne Grady Center was sentenced yesterday to seven years and 10 months in prison.
Valentin Havugiyaremye, 38, of 1931 Scottwood Ave., Apt. E-508, was found guilty June 12 by a Lucas County Common Pleas Court jury on two counts of gross sexual imposition and one of rape.
As part of the rape conviction, he must register as a sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life.
Havugiyaremye was convicted of gross sexual imposition for inappropriately touching a 16-year-old boy with mental disabilities while working as an aide at the Anne Grady Center.
The two remaining convictions were the result of inappropriate contact with a 20-year-old woman at the university library.
The incidents occurred within two days of each other in October.Havugiyaremye, who is in the U.S. on political asylum, asked that his conviction be appealed but refused to have an appellate attorney appointed for him.
The mothers of each victim offered tearful statements to Judge Ruth Ann Franks. The mother of the teenage boy asked that someone else read her statement because she was unable.
Havugiyaremye previously entered a plea to a misdemeanor in one of the cases but withdrew it, asked for a new attorney, and requested a trial. He was found guilty on all charges after a 2 1/2-day trial.
