8 OHIO ORGANIZATIONS CHOSEN
Terra Community College gets $10,000 grant to help Hispanic students
FREMONT - Terra Community College is one of eight organizations to receive a grant from the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission to better assist Hispanic Ohioans, specifically in the areas of education and integration of American customs.
The $10,000 Grassroots Initiative grant is to increase the college's outreach efforts to Latino youth with the goal of attracting and graduating more Hispanic students.
"My greatest concern with our Latino student population has been the retention rates. We have seen a decrease in the number of these students who continue on to the completion of a degree," said Mary McCue, the college's director of marketing, public relations, and enrollment services who helped write the grant. "This grant will give us the resources to aid our Latino students in completing their college coursework on Terra's campus."
Nearly 30 grant proposals were reviewed before eight organizations were chosen to share the $80,000 in community grants.
Others receiving the grant include: Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio; East End Community Center in Dayton; Youngstown State University; Casa Amiga at Tecumseh YMCA in New Carlisle, Ohio; Servicio a la Familia in Cincinnati; Hispanic Business Association in Cleveland, and the Salvation Army's Hispanic Soccer League in Cincinnati.
