The University of Toledo Medical Center plans to lay off at least 12 and as many as 50 employees as a result of the troubled economy.
Decisions are still being finalized as to which positions will be impacted. The departments at the medical center, formerly the Medical College of Ohio Hospital, have not been notified, UT spokesman Matt Lockwood said.
The layoffs coincide with a hiring freeze, Mr. Lockwood said, noting that positions essential to patient care will be filled.
"It's a proactive attempt to remain efficient," Mr. Lockwood said of the work force changes.
"Hospitals across the country are facing pressures financially, and this is a strategic effort to make sure UTMC remains efficient and can provide the best care possible."
Those impacted by the layoffs will be notified next week, Mr. Lockwood said.UTMC employees received an e-mail Monday telling them of the upcoming "strategic re-engineering of the work force" that includes layoffs and freezing vacant positions.
"This action comes after much review and discussion," the letter read. "Eliminating positions is never easy, but for the future of the institution it is a step that needs to be taken."
The e-mail was signed by Dr. Jeffrey Gold, dean of UT's college of medicine and executive vice president and provost for health affairs, and Mark Chastang, vice president and executive director of UTMC.
There are about 3,000 employees on UT's health science campus. Not all of them work at the hospital.
The hospitals fiscal year 2009 budget is $267 million. Unlike the university's academic side, the hospital does not receive state funding. It is a self-sufficient entity of the university that supports itself, Mr. Lockwood said.
