Lake Erie group awards 2 grants

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission has awarded nearly $30,000 to support two projects that address climate change and sustainable development priorities related to Lake Erie and its watershed.

The University of Toledo's college of engineering will receive $14,999 for its "Alternatives to using potable water to flush toilets and impacts on Lake Erie" project.

They will evaluate and compare three alternatives to current wastewater infrastructure - using roof water, using composting toilets, and using sink water - and review them for potential benefits.

Green Energy Ohio will receive $14,820 for a project called "Great Lakes Tall Tower Wind Monitoring Project." It is a 12-month wind monitoring study that will monitor wind speed, direction, and temperature via a communications tower in Lorain, Ohio.

The commission oversees the Ohio Lake Erie Protection Fund, which funds these projects.
