The University of Toledo is extending its UT Guarantee scholarship program to students in the Washington Local School District.
Beginning with the 2009 class of Whitmer High School, students with at least a 3.0 grade-point average who show some financial need can attend the university for free.
More than 200 Whitmer seniors will visit UT's campus Jan. 30 to learn more about the free tuition program and academic programs at the university. The visit will include a tour, a college fair, and an opportunity to talk to Whitmer graduates who are now students at UT.
Washington Local Superintendent Patrick Hickey said he contacted UT after learning about the scholarship program for Toledo Public Schools students and asked the university to expand it to Whitmer.
UT agreed and now all public high school students in Toledo who demonstrate need have the opportunity to attend the university tuition-free.
The UT Guarantee scholarship program was created to provide opportunities for students from Ohio's six urban communities - Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, and Toledo - to attend college and also to bolster enrollment from those areas. The program requires students to have a minimum 3.0 GPA in high school and show eligibility for the federal Pell Grant when filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA.
Students interested in attending next school year must apply to UT and file the FAFSA by April 1. The UT Guarantee is renewable for four years if the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA and completes 30 credit hours each school year.
