Toledo Zoo attendance in 2008 off 10 percent from 2007
The Toledo Zoo’s attendance was down 10 percent last year from 2007 and was 8 percent off the norm.
According to unaudited figures presented to the zoo’s board of directors yesterday, the park had 862,156 visitors last year. The norm is 935,000 a year. Attendance in 2007 was 955,710, but zoo officials have said a surge in attendance because of the birth of polar bear cubs probably inflated that figure.
The 2008 figures, considered preliminary until audited, also showed an 8 percent drop in revenue from nonmembership zoo admissions. The $2,544,888 collected was $227,526 less than the norm of $2,772,414.
Revenue from memberships was off by only 2 percent, though. The $3,294,664 collected for memberships was $82,241 less than the anticipated $3,376,905.
The downturn is attributed to the sour economy.
