Three more area players were selected on the final day of Major League Baseball's amateur draft.
Kyle Rhoad, an Elmwood graduate who is a senior at Eastern Michigan, was chosen in the 33rd round by Texas. Rhoad, an outfielder who was taken with the draft's 994th pick, hit .349 with 12 homers, 34 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases, a total that lead the Mid-American Conference.
Recently Rhoad was named to the academic All-America third team in baseball. Rhoad, who has a 3.91 GPA, earned a bachelor's degree from EMU in just three years and recently completed work on a master's degree in business administration with a focus in supply chain management.
The University of Toledo had a second player selected as Jeff Cinadr was taken by Tampa Bay in the 36th round. The 1,099th pick, Cinadr is a right-handed pitcher who last season was 2-0 with a team-best 4.15 ERA in 30 appearances for the Rockets.
Bowling Green State University junior and Clay graduate Derek Spencer was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 45th round yesterday. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound third baseman was taken with the 1,352nd overall pick.
Spencer, currently playing in North Carolina for the Outer Banks Daredevils in the Coastal Plains League, played a key role in the Falcons claiming the Mid-American Conference regular season and East division titles the last two seasons. He was named a second-team All-MAC selection in 2009 after finishing with a .385 batting average, 15 homers, and 59 RBIs.
