Farr turns serious with the start of official play today

The Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic presented by Kroger continues through Sunday at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania. The first round of official play starts tomorrow, with the final round to be held on Sunday, followed by the winners' ceremony. Two-for-one grounds tickets are available at all Kroger stores. Public parking is at the corner of Centennial and Brint roads, where free bus service is offered to and from the course.

Taking it to the Streets, downtown Sylvania's Main Street Festival and Celebration of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, will be held from 5-9 tonight. Presented by the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce, the free party includes food and refreshments, a car show, musical entertainment, and children's activities.

Back In the Day Summer Soul Jam will be staged at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. The evening features 1980s groups Midnight Star and Al Hudson & One Way. Midnight Star's hits include, "Freak-a-Zoid," "No Parking On The Dance Floor," and "Slow Jam." Hits by Al Hudson & One Way, formerly Al Hudson & the Soul Partners, include "I Got A Notion" and "Mr. Groove." Tickets range from $25 to $45 from the box office at 419-381-8851, Ticketmaster at 419-474-1333, and ticketmaster.com.

A Fiddle Contest and Summer on the Farm will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. July 11 at Sauder Village in Archbold. The event allows guests to experience life on a farm of more than 100 years ago. Activities include making ice cream, butter, and rope to participating in a spelling bee, washing clothes on a scrub board, and watching feathers being plucked from a goose.

Rickey Prater and the Midnight Travelers will perform at 12:30 p.m. in Founder's Hall, followed by the youth fiddle competition and some of the best adult fiddlers in the tri-state region. Adult admission is $12.50, students $6.50 (ages 6-16), and children 5 and younger are free. Senior and AAA discounts are available.
