Warm weather fun continues here in T-town, which means enjoying the outdoors whenever possible.
On the courts TENNIS in Toledo is smashing. The City of Toledo Singles Championship was Saturday afternoon at the Toledo Tennis Club in Ottawa Hills. Champions are Zorana George, who defeated Morgan Delp in the women’s division, and Todd Dominiak, who defeated Kyle Collette in the men’s division.
The City of Toledo Doubles Championship is Aug. 12 for the women and Aug. 13 for the men at Shadow Valley Tennis Club. However, this weekend is the Northwest Ohio District Championships of the U.S. Tennis Association at Perrysburg Tennis Center, Fallen Timbers, Laurel Hills, and Shadow Valley.
That’s just in time for the State of Ohio Championships of the US TA Aug. 14-16 at Shadow Valley. All three state divisions will be playing there.
If you are a casual tennis player, there are plenty of public outdoor courts around town, including Jermaine, Ottawa, and Perrysburg city parks, all with lighted courts for night players. Side Cut park has a few courts tucked away there too. Tennis courts are plentiful at country clubs, including Inverness Club, Sylvania Country Club, Stone Oak Country Club, Toledo Country Club, and Belmont Country Club, which also has indoors courts.
In the party lot THE weather was perfect for the Toledo Club’s XXII Annual Party in the Parking Lot, presented by The Blade, Friday night. Sponsors were WTOL-TV, Channel 11, and WRVF The River 101.5 FM.
This is the second year that the proceeds benefited the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northwest Ohio. The group estimated it will break even with change to spare.
The open-to-the-public event was kicked off with George Damron and the Buffalo Ridge and ended with the Jets. Between tunes, mingling with the other 800 or so guests was the name of the game.
Of course, mingling was done all while sipping one’s favorite beverage, including mango margaritas, or munching from a magnificent menu of beef or chicken kabobs, pizza, corn on the cob, dogs, burgers, and more, plus fried green beans and Yukon potato chips, novelty ice cream, and funnel cake fries.
Many party-goers shopped at the Hall of Framers booth that offered framed sports memorabilia, including a Mickey Mantle poster and a raffle for a trip to a Cleveland Browns football game. A percentage of the sales went to the cause.
Greg Kopan, event chairman, was there with his fiancee, Juanita Miller. He was assisted by club member Craig Herschel and Anna Kolin, who is bidding farewell to the club and heading to work at the Imagination Station, formerly COSI at Portside.
Among the gadders who paid $27.50 in advance or $30 at the door were Michael and Lori Mack, Tony Bishop, Sheila Wollet, Marilyn and Tom Heintschel, Dan and Mary DiSalle, John Scott, Jerry and Julie Brown, Jack and Cyndi Sculfort, Diane and John Lark, Jack Zouhary and his wife, Kathleen, Gretchen and Mark Zyndorf, Brian Epstein, Martha and Duke Wheeler, Larry Boyer, Doug and Angie Rechtine, and Kevin and Judy Kwiatkowski, who assisted with serving the crowd as did other members.
Stevie Grand and her hubby, Bob Lubell, snapped pictures, gratis, then watched the fun develop.
Mr. Lubell is a firm believer in giving back to the community, and said they donate 20 percent of their services annually.
In the hospitality tent were Bob and Kathy Chirdon, Michael Seay, Tanya Pipatjarasgit and Brian Nupp, Tommy and Annie Pipatjarasgit, and others. Meanwhile, the club staff and the security were all smiles.
… More for the cure And the winner is Daniel Gellert! The Chapman Annual Lawn Sports Event 2009 July 18 at the home turf of Kimi and Brian Chapman was a genteel day of competition. Games including croquet, boccie, kickball, horseshoes, ladder ball, jarts, and more, are played all day long. Of course, refreshments are served to quench thirsts and sate appetites. Many of Mr. Chapman’s classmates from Cornell University fly in from New York City every year to join the fun. A green blazer, much like the Masters jacket, goes to the winner and the loser receives a small golden gnome.
Special this year, the Chapmans made it a charity event and sent a donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, honoring both of their mothers, who have breast cancer.
Fun to the T THE DENTAL Center of Northwest Ohio hosted “A Toast to Teeth!” July 24 in the Nairobi Pavilion at the Toledo Zoo. The event was in honor of the Junior League of Toledo for its Toledo Smiles project for underserved adolescent dental care.
The project, which started in 2005, has reached more than 2,000 adolescents to date.
So this night was all about smiles and fun while fund-raising, and who better to put a smile on ones face than Toledo’s First Lady of Jazz, Jean Holden? There to entertain with her was her daughter, Lisa Holden.
Folks mingled about as they tasted wines from The Andersons General Store in Maumee. Nick Kubiak, the wine manager, was on hand to provide details of the vinos.
Appetites were sated with a scrumptious sit-down dinner for both carnivores and herbivores, prepared by the executive chef of the Toledo Zoo. Among the about 100 supporters in attendance were board members Nan Tertel and Becca Gorman, who is a Junior League past president. The chairman of the Dental Center board is Steve Shall and the president of the Junior League is Alice Momenee.
The estimated net is more than $10,000. Melinda “Lindy” Cree is the Dental Center president.
