Police: Columbus gunman shoots officer, kills himself
COLUMBUS — A suspected drunken driver who refused to stop for police and shot an officer in the face with a high-powered rifle fatally shot himself inside his apartment Monday, police said.
The man’s body was found by SWAT teams that entered the apartment, where he had barricaded himself, at 6:30 p.m., Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner said. Police identified the man as 37-year-old Jason Farnsworth.
A 28-year-old officer was shot in the cheek, with the bullet exiting his chin, at about 3:40 p.m., Weiner said. The officer was in stable condition at Ohio State University Medical Center and was expected to survive.
A second officer was shot in a bulletproof vest and was not injured.
Police tried to pull the man over on Interstate 71 at about 3:20 p.m., after they received a report of a suspected drunken driver, Weiner said. The man later exited the interstate, stopped the car and fled on foot, firing the rifle at police, he said.
He continued shooting at police after barricading himself inside the apartment, Weiner said.
