Downtown Toledo residents find there’s plenty to do nearby

Don’t try to tell Barbie Zachrich that there’s nothing to do downtown other than go to Fifth Third Field or the new arena. As property manager at the Commodore Perry Apartments on Jefferson Avenue, she’s made it her business to know better.
“We confirmed 47 restaurants and bars within a one-mile radius of the Commodore Perry,” she said.
And that’s just the beginning.
Those who live downtown know. They live in places like the LaSalle Apartments, a converted department store, or the Commodore Perry, a former hotel. Or, like Heather Schmidt, they live in condominiums like the Bartley Lofts.
“I like the businesses and the hustle-bustle. There is a lot of energy and it’s good energy,” said the 38-year-old who previously lived in Whitehouse. “I like the fact that you can walk to a lot of shops like the Farmer’s Market and Libbey Glass [Factory Outlet].”
There are other retail opportunities within a pedestrian’s range too: Swan Creek Candle Co., Sophia Lustig and Sophie’s Sister shops for clothing, and a number of cool galleries that are part of “art walks” during the summer.
Downtowners in need of a caffeine boost can pop over to Biggby Coffee on Madison Avenue after they grab something to read at the nearby Leo’s Book Shop. Or they can stop in at Downtown Latte on St. Clair Street and follow it up with a massage down the block at Ahava Spa and Wellness Center.
Emily Lindsey, who’s been living at the Commodore Perry for about a year, enjoys walking or riding her bike along the Maumee River. Promenade Park is close by and those who venture farther and cross the river can reward themselves with a visit to International Park and the restaurants at the Docks.
Those seeking cultural enrichment can always visit the historic Valentine Theatre or, starting next month, Imagination Station, the hands-on science center formerly known as COSI.
Miss Lindsey, 27, said the nightlife can be a lot of fun too, especially with all of the restaurants and bars in the area. Some of her favorites include the Blarney Irish pub, PizzaPapalis, and the Bronze Boar. Live entertainment is no stranger to these parts, especially at the downtown jazz mecca Murphy’s Place.
It’s almost an embarrassment of riches, and Miss Lindsey thinks more people are destined to take advantage of it.
“I think it’s really starting to catch on now.”
