Array of food awaits hungry spectators
Arena fare includes a deepfried walleye sandwich.

You’re watching the Walleye hammer the Wheeling Nailers and suddenly you realize you’re hungry. What’s a person to do?

Head for the traditional concession fare of ice cream and freshly made funnel cakes at the Lucas County Arena. Or you could visit the themed stands for “the consumer who has a level of expectation that a box of popcorn is not sufficient and they want more,” said Scott Fuernstein, general manager, food and beverage, at Lucas County Arena and SeaGate Convention Centre for V/Gladieux Enterprises, which operates the concessions and catering.

The themes relate to the Toledo Walleye hockey team and the area.

“We tried to pick up on local items,” said Steve Miller, general manager of the new arena and the SeaGate Convention Centre. “That’s why you have the Walleye sandwich [made with deep fried walleye], the Bullfrog Dog [hot dog named for the Toledo Bullfrog team of the arenafootball2 league], and the Italian-style Vitucci burger [named for Walleye head coach Nick Vitucci].”

In addition to the 10 concession stands throughout the arena, there are nine portable carts that include burritos and quesadillas and barbecued food.

The BBQ cart will feature We-Are-Ribs, which is a partnership between Gladieux and James McDay, who has been the People’s Choice winner at the Northwest Ohio Rib-Off. “We’ll buy his barbecue sauce, ribs, and baked beans,” Mr. Fuernstein said.

Prices are similar to what you find at the Toledo Mud Hens games. “We still have a $2 hot dog and a $2 soda,” he said, estimating that a family of four can eat for $25 to $30 depending on what they choose.

The higher priced items include the walleye sandwich at $8.25, the specialty angus burger at $6.50, and the pulled pork combo at $8.
