Lake Township's Friendly Park: Playground equipment is a donation

Lake Township's Friendly Park will be getting a donation of playground equipment.

The Friends of Lake Township Parks Committee bought the equipment from the Lucas County Educational Service Center to give to the township. The trustees accepted the donation at last week's meeting.

The equipment has been at the Educational Service Center's former facility on River Road in Waterville, the former Waterville School. The Lake Township group paid $3,750. New, the equipment would sell for $53,000, according to Trustee Melanie Bowen.

"This is a coup for the township. It really is," Ms. Bowen said at the meeting. "I think you'll see a lot of children on it."

Ms. Bowen said township maintenance workers will dismantle the equipment and reassemble it at Friendship Park, which is next to the township hall.

Sandra Frisch, the educational service center's superintendent, said her agency used to lease the Waterville building for a before-and-after-school program from the Anthony Wayne Local Schools, but no longer did so.

Ms. Frisch put the age of the equipment at about seven years. "It's in very good shape. It's important that it's in a place where there are a lot of children," she explained.

In other business, Trustee Richard Welling said Halloween Trick or Treat hours in the township would be 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Mr. Welling also said the Wood County Health Department had supplied the township with booklets about the flu season that were for public distribution.

Mr. Welling also announced:

•Fall brush pickup for the unincorporated areas of the township will be Oct. 19-22 for areas east of I-280.

•Free wood chips are available at the road department on Ayers Road. For more information, call 419-836-1143.

•The Lake Township Police Association will have its spaghetti dinner in the township hall from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 20.

•The fire department will hold a pancake breakfast at Station 2, 1911 Ayers, from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 31.

Police Chief Mark Hummer reported to the trustees that in September his department received reports of 17 thefts, 1 breaking and entering, 6 incidences of domestic violence, 3 assaults, and 3 burglaries.
