Ohioans supporting casino gambling
BLADE STAFF
Early election night results suggested Ohio voters are far more receptive to throwing their lot in with casinos than in the past.
With 74 percent of the unofficial vote counted, nearly 53 percent of voters were backing Issue 3 and its four casinos in Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.
Toledo's casino, its location etched into the Ohio Constitution, would be on a 44-acre, reclaimed industrial site on the south bank of the Maumee River abutting Rossford and I-75.
As the count has proceeded, however, the casinos' lead has been gradually shrinking.
Some of the strongest early support was showing up in numbers from Lucas, Cuyahoga, and Hamilton counties where three of the four casinos would be located.
But both sides were closely watching Franklin County, where Columbus is the county seat. With 85 percent of its vote counted, Franklin was voting against the issue.
Rural areas were also more likely to oppose the plan.
Voters were more soundly approving Issue 2, which would write a new state panel into the constitution to develop standards for the treatment of farm livestock. Sixty-five percent of voters were backing the plan.
Issue 1, the bond issue for cash bonuses for Ohio veterans of recent wars, was passing with 72 percent of the vote.
