Around the Town: Shopping for charity

Shopping in the name of charity was the scene last month during the annual Fall Trunk Show and Luncheon presented by the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County Alliance at Sylvania Country Club.

Vendors included Sheffield Road, Pampered Chef, the Toledo Zoo Gift Shop, plus assorted jewelry, purses and scarves. A basket raffle of wines, cookbooks, teapots, and more, including a Jan Pugh platter, was popular too. A tasty meal fueled the more than 100 shoppers at the Oct. 27 event.

Noted members in attendance were Jennell Brown, current alliance president, Kusum Hegde, a past president, and her daughter, Kiran Rai, president-elect. Mrs. Rai will take office in May. Event chairmen Mrs. Rai and Nancie Chablani report a lot of fun and more than $3,000 netted for the Battered Women's Shelter.

ALSO for charity, Harbor House and Toledo Seagate Food Bank presented "Dinner: Impossible" Oct. 18 at the Toledo Hilton.

Area restaurants created meals from the commodities list of the food bank, such as dry beans, peanut butter, canned meats, frozen chicken, vegetables, and fruit. Taking the challenge were Grumpy's, 3100 Restaurant at the Hilton, Maumee Chop House, Grape Leaf, The Lounge, and a class from the Owens Community College Food, Nutrition and Hospitality department, which won the Judge's Choice Award with a Curried Pumpkin Soup. The People's Choice Award went to The Lounge for its Ham, Bean, and Pea Soup. The event netted about $10,000, which made Rafi Rafeeq, honorary chairman, smile.
