Lucas County gets more doses of H1N1 vaccine

The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department received 7,000 dosages of H1N1 vaccine Tuesday, barely more than a third of last week's supply but enough to supply all of the clinics scheduled in coming days.
The health department, for example, is holding a drive-through H1N1 clinic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the University of Toledo's Health Science Campus at 3000 Arlington Ave. It also is inoculating students this week at Washington Local Schools and at some parochial and charter schools.
"We're not looking at shortages at any of the things we're planning," Dr. David Grossman, health department commissioner, said yesterday.
Local health departments throughout Ohio received weekly shipments of vaccine for the so-called swine flu yesterday. Doses still are targeted for high-risk groups, including pregnant women, those aged 6 months to 24 years, health-care workers, people who live with or care for infants younger than 6 months, and those aged 25 to 64 with chronic health conditions.
Dr. Grossman is hopeful that everyone in the high-risk categories who wants the vaccine will receive it by early next month, clearing the way for others to get vaccinated.
The Wood County Health Department received just 400 H1N1 vaccine doses yesterday. But, combined with some reserves, it will have 1,400 injectable and nasal-mist dosages available for a clinic from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow at IBEW Local 8 Union Hall, 807 Lime City Rd., in Rossford, said Pat Snyder, department public information officer."My guess is we will once again run out of the injectable [vaccine], but it's hard to tell," she said.
Other clinics for high-risk groups include:
•Fulton County Health Department, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, at the health department, 606 South Shoop Ave., Wauseon. (Nasal-mist vaccine only for those aged 2 to 24 with no underlying health problems.)
•Monroe County Health Department, noon to 6 p.m. tomorrow, Francis Family YMCA, 2000 West Dean Rd., Temperance. Also noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Lutheran High School, 8210 North Telegraph Rd., Newport.
•Ottawa County Health Department, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the health department, 1856 East Perry St., Port Clinton. Appointments required by calling 419-734-6800.
•Sandusky County Health Department, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Gibsonburg High School, 740 South Main St.
• Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow and Friday at the health department, 635 North Erie St.
The Fulton County Health Department, which received 300 H1N1 vaccine doses Tuesday, also has 1,200 doses available for an appointment-only clinic Thursday.
The department hopes to have enough H1N1 vaccine to start holding school clinics after Thanksgiving, said Cindy Rose, director of nursing.
