Award-winning guitarist, 16, to open concert series
Pianist Stewart Goodyear performs Nov. 20 and 21 in the Peristyle as part of the symphony Classics series.

Chamber Music Toledo will open its 2009-2010 Artist Series with a concert featuring 16-year-old guitarist Chaconne Klaverenga at 3 p.m. Nov. 22 in Maumee's First Presbyterian Church, 200 East Broadway. Also on the program will be the Passacaglia Quartet from the Toledo Symphony.

Named for J.S. Bach's Chaconne in D Minor, Klaverenga won three international guitar competitions in 2007, the first year she entered. Since then, she has continued to win major contests, and has begun to appear in concert around the country.

The CMT program will begin with solo pieces by Klaverenga, who will then be joined by the quartet for a work by Luigi Boccherini. The quartet will perform Mendelssohn's String Quartet No. 1 to conclude the program. Tickets are $1-$15 at the door ($12 if purchased by Nov. 20) or in advance at 419-246-8000.

Pianist Stewart Goodyear will join maestro Stefan Sanderling and the Toledo Symphony for an All-American program in its Classics III concerts at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21 in the Peristyle. The Charles Ives Symphony No. 3 and his Variations on "America" will be performed with George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F and "An American in Paris."

Tickets are $22-$50 at 419-246-8000 or toledosymphony.com. Student rush tickets are available one hour before each performance.

Falstaff, the Verdi comedy which is Toledo Opera's opening production of its 51st season, will return for a 7:30 p.m. performance tomorrow and a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday at the Valentine Theatre. Tickets are $25-$90 at 419-255-7464 or toledoopera.org or at the door.

The Perrysburg Symphony Chorale will present A Handel Celebration at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 in Trinity Episcopal Church downtown, and at 3 p.m. Nov. 22 in First United Methodist Church, Perrysburg. Under the direction of Wayne Anthony, the choir will perform the Baroque composer's Ode for St. Cecelia's Day and his Coronation Anthems. Tickets are $8 at the door.

Musical events at Bowling Green State University continue with guest violinist Marcia Henry Liebenow in a free public recital at 8 p.m. Monday in Bryan Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Accompanied by faculty pianist Robert Satterlee, Liebenow will perform works by Beethoven, Kernis, and Faure.

Music from Bowling Green at the Manor House will continue with the BGSU Graduate String Quartet performing in a free public concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Manor House of Wildwood Preserve Metropark.

Music at the Forefront will present pianist Alan Feinberg, a Grammy nominee, in a free public performance of contemporary American music at 8 p.m. Nov. 19 in Bryan Recital Hall.

The Pemberville Opera House will present a chamber music concert at 7 p.m. Monday in the historic theater in downtown Pemberville. Romanian violist Dimitrita Moldovan will be featured performer and will be joined by other musicians for this free public concert. For more information, contact pembervilleoperahouse.org.

Masterworks Chorale will offer a sample of its upcoming holiday concerts during an appearance at the Toledo Zoo, 6 p.m. Nov. 20. The chorale will sing for the lighting of the zoo's tree and herald the Lights Before Christmas. After the lighting, chorale singers will sing holiday carols until the zoo closes at 9 p.m.

The Berlin Philharmoniker will perform at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Hill Auditorium of the University of Michigan. Sir Simon Rattle will lead the historic orchestra in Brahms symphonies No. 3 and 4 and Schoenberg's "Begleitmusik zu einer Lichtspilszene" (Music for a Film Scene). Tickets are $10-$125 at ums.org.

BGSU composer Mikel Kuehn has won the Aaron Copland Award, a residency based in the Hudson River home of the great American composer. Kuehn is one of 8 to 10 emerging American composers invited to stay at Copland House in New York for three weeks or more. The program is an official project of the White House "Save America's Treasures" initiative. Kuehn, who also runs the BGSU MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music, was selected from some 110 applicants and will be in residence in May. Kuehn also was selected as one of three winners of the Lee Ettelson Composer's Award, a program of Composers, Inc.

Items for News of Music should be sent to svallongo@theblade.com at least two weeks before the performance date.
