Lucas County OKs pact to discount electric bill

Lucas County commissioners yesterday approved a six-year contract that assures area residents of a 5 percent discount on electric rates and provides the county with a check for just over $1 million.

The agreement extends the bulk-buying of energy through May, 2017.

Nine area communities make up the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Coalition: Toledo, Maumee, Northwood, Oregon, Sylvania, Perrysburg Township, Holland, Lake Township, and those in unincorporated parts of Lucas County. Mr. Gerken said the arrangement has saved residential and commercial consumers $100 million over 10 years.

As part of the agreement, FirstEnergy Solutions made grants to area governments for participating in the bulk-buying arrangement, including $3.2 million to Toledo.
