'Fluffhead' or bust: A journey to see Phish
Welcome to the Blade blog Culture Shock, a three-times-a-week riff by Pop Culture Editor Kirk Baird on pop culture news, events, and trends. The blog will appear Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings here, with the odd night or off-day posting if something is merited.
This won't be a typical review of a Phish concert. But for now, that's all I've got.
Phish made a triumphant return to the Motor City on Wednesday night, and rocked a surprisingly not sold-out Cobo Arena.
The concert, which is available here on the band's Website, consisted of nimble fretwork and some monstrous jams, with frontman and guitarist Trey Anastasio, and bassist Mike Gordon, making the most of their time.
It's a rare talent for a band this tight to be this loose.
Longtime Phish fans may claim the group's not what it was pre-'00s, that there's not the same adventurous spirit in the music. But that go-for-broke mentality lost inevitably to age has been replaced by finer musical chops and the artistic maturity and wisdom that only comes with experience.
Phish isn't what it was; it's what it needs to be: four musicians and friends who have rediscovered their passion for music and for the band.
Sometimes older=better.
I'll be back later to expand on the show and to make sense of the headline.
