McNamara to explore Ohio Senate run
BLADE STAFF
Toledo City Council President Joe McNamara announced Friday he will form a committee to explore a campaign for the 11th District Senate seat being vacated by Teresa Fedor, who's term-limited.
The 32-year-old Democrat will decide whether to enter the May 4, 2010 Democratic Primary by the end of January.
“I’m taking this step because we need an effective advocate in Columbus who will stand up for our values and demonstrate leadership during these difficult times,” said Mr. McNamara. “Now, more than ever, we need public servants that seek common ground and pursue common sense strategies to fix government, promote job growth, and strengthen our middle class.”
If Mr. McNamara decides to run for the Fedor Senate seat he would set up a unusual local Democratic battle with Democratic heavyweight Ohio Rep. Peter Ujvagi (D., Toledo), a former city council president himself who is also term-limited and is expected to run for Ms. Fedor's Senate seat. In fact, Mr. Ujvagi and Ms. Fedor have discussed running for each other's seats to stay in state government after their current terms are up.
First elected to a Toledo city council at-large seat in a 2006 special election, Mr. McNamara was chosen as council president in July. In November, he was re-elected to city council, receiving the most votes of any candidate on the Toledo ballot.
He is a partner in the Toledo law firm of McNamara and Schaller. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the New York University School of Law. Prior to his election to city council, he served as a trustee of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library system.
