Sandusky woman dies after 2-car crash

PORT CLINTON - A Sandusky woman died in a hospital after being hurt in a two-car crash that also seriously injured another Erie County woman Thursday night in Ottawa County, authorities said.

Ashley Wilson, 21, a passenger in one of the cars, was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Anna Bowman, 20, also of Sandusky, who the patrol said was driving the car, was listed in serious condition Friday morning at Mercy St. Vincent, a hospital spokesman said. She was wearing a seat belt, troopers at the patrol's Sandusky post said. Ms. Wilson was not, they said.

The accident occurred about 2:50 p.m. on Wilcox Road just east of Wonnell Road in Bay Township southwest of Port Clinton. The women's car veered across the road and forced a second car off the road, eventually striking that second vehicle and injuring three others, troopers said. Wilcox runs parallel to State Rt. 2.

The driver of the second car, Lisa Meyer, 45, of Oak Harbor, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Magruder Memorial Hospital in Port Clinton. Two passengers in her car, Samantha Meyer, 12, and Scott Gdovicak, 39, both of Oak Harbor, also were taken to Magruder. Both Lisa and Samantha Meyer were wearing seat belts; Mr. Gdovicak was not, the troopers said.

Investigators said the crash occurred when Ms. Bowman's car was westbound on Wilcox. The car first veered off the road to the right, then swerved left across the center line.

The Meyer car, which was eastbound on Wilcox, swerved right and off the road to avoid a collision, but the Bowman car ended up striking it, and both vehicles stopped in grass on the road's south side, troopers said.

Port Clinton is about 30 miles east of Toledo.
