5 injured in crash of 2 cars southwest of Port Clinton

PORT CLINTON - Two Erie County women were seriously injured yesterday afternoon when their car veered across a road in Ottawa County and forced a second car off the road, eventually striking that second vehicle and injuring three others.

Anna Bowman, 20, and her passenger, Ashley Wilson, 21, both of Sandusky, suffered serious injuries in the crash, according to troopers at the Sandusky post of the Ohio Highway Patrol. The accident occurred on Wilcox Road just east of Wonnell Road southwest of Port Clinton. Wilcox runs parallel to State Rt. 2.

Both women were flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. Miss Bowman, who was wearing a seat belt, was listed in serious condition. Hospital personnel were able to provide no information on the condition of Miss Wilson, who was not wearing her seat belt.

The driver of the second car, Lisa Meyer, 45, of Oak Habor, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Magruder Memorial Hospital in Port Clinton. Two passengers in her car, Samantha Meyer, 12, and Scott Gdovicak, 39, both of Oak Harbor, also were taken to Magruder. Both Lisa and Samantha Meyer were wearing seat belts; Mr. Gdovicak was not.

Investigators said the crash occurred about 2:50 p.m. with Ms. Bowman's car westbound on Wilcox. The car first veered off the road to the right, then swerved left across the center line.

The Meyer car, which was eastbound on Wilcox, swerved right and off the road to avoid a collision, but the Bowman car ended up striking it, and both vehicles stopped in grass on the road's south side.
