Don't pick at Skeldon carcass

Will someone please step up and tell Commissioner Ben Konop to stop picking at the carcass of dog warden Tom Skeldon?

He has tendered his resignation effective early next year and it is time for the Board of Commissioners to move on and make a better dog pound that is free of controversy.

The renewed request by Mr. Konop for the immediate termination of Mr. Skeldon after he has publicly resigned is nothing but a personal vendetta against the man. It smells worse than the rotting, bloated, maggot-infested corpse of a dog laying beside a road on a hot summer day.

If this is how he intends to act in the future as an elected official in Lucas County, then voters should look for more mature leadership in another candidate when his seat comes up for re-election.

Name Konop the new dog warden

Now that he has forced Dog Warden Tom Skeldon to retire, Mr. "Stir the Pot" and "Talk the Talk" Ben Konop should be appointed the new dog warden so he can "walk the walk" on the same budget.

License owners, not their dogs

To all the people who are breeding puppies to sell:

I see your ads every day. I am especially intrigued by the names you concoct to make your mixed-breed pups sound fancy and expensive.

You ought to be ashamed. You sell these puppies for inordinate amounts of money, never thinking that the puppy will be surrendered or abandoned.

All you care about is money. It ought to be obvious by the number of rescue groups and shelters in Toledo that we do not need any more indiscriminate breeding.

We really do not need any more purebreds either. There are plenty of purebreds up for rescue. Just go to Petfinder on the Internet.

I have said for years that we need to license the owners, not the dogs.

New dog warden will just cost more

Nice job, Toledo, you've let the vocal minority run a great public servant out of town. What a shame Tom Skeldon has left the building. The city is bleeding in red ink.

Beware and brace yourself because the new dog warden will want a higher wage. You'll also have more dogs to feed, inoculate, spay, and neuter.

All you have to do is adopt eight dogs per day for 365 days. Oops … the pound isn't open holidays and Sundays. All you have to do is adopt about 11 animals per working day. By The Blade's account, two dogs were adopted on Nov. 16. You better get crackin' cause the pound is going to fill up. You are going to need a new facility to house those cuddly pit bulls.

I have an idea: Let the stray dogs run free. You wouldn't need a warden or a building. Talk about saving money. I'm surprised Ben Konop has not thought of that idea.

What do you think the deer in Ottawa Hills will say when they get wind of what's going on in the city?

County buyouts are too generous

Please, please tell me I misread the Nov. 21 article, "Skeldon could get buyout," which referred to a proposed voluntary separation plan to offer Lucas County employees - after "at least [one] year of service" - a payout of 25 percent of their first $50,000 base pay?

This ridiculous proposal would be a waste of our taxes. No one should be eligible for such a buyout until at least fiveservice years.

Burning is only option for some

I would like to respond to the person who had the concern about burning in Michigan.

I know the smoke is dangerous to our health because I have a wife with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) who is on oxygen 24 hours a day, but I still have the problem of getting rid of my leaves.

Living in Temperance for 35 years, this problem has not yet been solved by the township.

Not everyone can afford to pay to have them hauled away. Not all farmers want your leaves for mulch, either. Think of another solution.

Who will protect township now?

The day following the failed police levy in Springfield Township, I sent e-mails to all three township trustees as well as to David Carr, a Springfield Township Block Watch advocate. As of this writing, none has replied.

Mr. Carr started a Block Watch group during the summer months for the Saw Mill Run and Fox Run subdivisions. This proved to be very informative and helpful for residents with some meetings and particularly through regular e-mail updates by Mr. Carr.

As time passed, Mr. Carr's e-mails became more political in nature, expounding his personal political views and preferences. He refused to forward differing views I had expressed to the residents on his e-mail list, citing confidentiality. As the e-mails became more personally motivated, I asked Mr. Carr to remove my name from his list.

Mr. Carr was heavily in favor of staying with the Lucas County Sheriff's Office over changing to the Holland Police Department. I felt the deputies had been doing a good job but the potential for a larger and closer Holland Police Department had its merits.

Either way, whether it was the Holland police or the Lucas County sheriff's department, Springfield Township was going to have to pay.

Both sides of the issue were worth looking at more closely. The question as to which department the township would go with should have been argued only after the levy passed. Now that it has failed, what protection do residents of Springfield Township have after Jan. 1?

Good job to both sides of the issue. I hope you're happy now. I hope the residents of the township are prepared to protect and defend their own homes and families.

Hope and change are proving costly

I never was much good at math but from what I can tell, we now have new-new math and it goes like this:

Hope + Change = Tax + Spend.

Terror attack is not an act of war

Jack Kelly's recent column, "Obama's vendetta," is nothing more than an attempt to have the 9/11 terrorists judged in a military court, thereby attaching a stamp of legitimacy to former President George W. Bush's war on Iraq.

A terrorist attack is not classified as an act of war.

Comatose columnist just woke up

Columnist Jack Kelly wrote about the Obama Administration, “This has been the most political administration in modern times.”

How wonderful to hear that Mr. Kelly has awakened from his eight-year coma.

Someone will have to catch him up on what he missed.
