Falcons stop Rockets; peace pipe stays in Bowling Green
By DONALD EMMONS BLADE SPORTS WRITER
BOWLING GREEN – The peace pipe will stay in Bowling Green for the third straight year.
After jumping out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter Friday afternoon, the Bowling Green Falcons had to fight off a torrid rally by the Toledo Rockets to come away with a 38-24 victory before 14,075 at Doyt Perry Stadium.
“It's a great win for the Falcons,” BG coach Dave Clawson said.
The Rockets were guilty of 3 fumbles, 2 interceptions, 2 punts blocked, and a muffed punt.
Yet, the Falcons didn't come away with an easy time knocking off their Mid-American Conference rival..
The Rockets (5-7, 5-5 MAC) scored 24 unanswered points to tie the game early in the fourth quarter before BG quarterback Tyler Sheehan capped a 60-yard, eight-play scoring drive by connecting with Freddie Barnes on a 17-yard touchdown pass to make it 31-24 with just over nine minutes left in the game.
The Falcons (7-5, 6-2 MAC) scored another touchdown late — Willie Geter's third 1-yard touchdown run — coming shortly after a controversial fumble by Toledo freshman wideout Eric Page near BG's 10-yard line.
Page pulled in a pass from Austin Dantin and gained 18 yards before he was wrapped up and stripped by BG's Adrien Spencer. Jerett Sanderson recovered the loose ball for BG at the Falcons' 11-yard line with 3:15 left in the contest
