The sheer joy of moving to music is splashed across the faces of the children in Ann Heckler's Saturday afternoon dance class at the Toledo Ballet. The joy is what matters - not dance steps or form, discipline or posture. Neither Mrs. Heckler nor her assistants seem miffed, or surprised, when a boy sprawls on the floor amid a swirl of other dancers because he's tired, or when a little girl crawls under a table, pulling a chair in behind her.
Don't try to fool Joe Lassiter. The 6-year-old from Northwood knew that wasn't a real dog that floated above him at about the height of a housetop during the Downtown Holiday Parade Saturday. "He's just a balloon," said Joe, who admired the display nonetheless. "They spinned him around."
When Fanny Effler's daily walk takes her through the neighborhood near her Old West End home, she finds fewer friendly waves and more boarded windows. "This used to be a beautiful street," she said during a recent stroll down Boston Place, less than a block away from her Collingwood Boulevard residence.
Toledo police are looking for two men who robbed a Lagrange Street Subway. According to police, two men made off with money, an iPod, and an employee's purse from the Subway at 3336 Lagrange in the incident that occurred at 8 p.m. Friday. The men were described by store employees as black males wearing hoods and hats, with their faces well covered. At least one showed a gun.
Maumee Police are searching for a robber who stole the money — red kettle and all — from a Salvation Army volunteer outside the Andersons Saturday night. A bellringer told police she was approached about 6:25 p.m. by a scruffy-looking man who grabbed the chain of the kettle, struggled with her, then pushed her and pulled the kettle away from her.
A pregnant Fostoria woman died of injuries suffered in a two-car crash southeast of here Thursday that seriously injured another woman, the Ohio Highway Patrol said. Ashley Wilson, 21, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday in Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. She was in her first trimester of pregnancy, said Dr. Diane Barnett, the Lucas County deputy coroner. Troopers said she was a passenger in a car driven by Anna Bowman, 20, of Sandusky that went left of center at 2:50 p.m. on westbound Wilcox Road just east of Wonnell Road in Bay Township.
Tensions in Ottawa Hills over a proposed deer cull have led to vandalism at the Edgehill Road home of retired Ohio Supreme Court Justice Alice Robie Resnick. "I was really surprised at such behavior. I would think everyone would respect other people's opinions," Ms. Resnick said of what she discovered around 7:45 Thanksgiving morning.
A fight outside a North Toledo bar over a cell phone early Friday ended with a man being shot, police said. The victim, Lemuel Jackson, 22, whose Toledo address was not released, suffered a gunshot wound in the back. He was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where no information about his condition was available. The shooting occurred about 2:15 a.m. at the Palms Bar and Grill, the former Hot Shotz Night Club, at 3833 North Detroit Ave. near Tudor Street, police said.
