NAPOLEON — The trial of a Henry County woman charged in the death of her 13-month-old daughter was postponed on Friday.
Henry County Common Pleas Judge Keith P. Muehlfeld postponed the trial of Jayme Schwenkmeyer, 24, of Liberty Center, and that of her co-defendant David E. Knepley until the Ohio Supreme Court makes a final ruling about the constitutionality of an order that prohibits the media from reporting on Ms. Schwenkmeyer's trial until a jury is seated for Mr. Knepley's trial.
Her trial was scheduled to begin on Monday and his was to start on Feb. 8.
After the judge's postponement of the trials, he agreed to allow Ms. Schwenkmeyer to be released from jail while she's awaiting trial.
She faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in the 2007 drug overdose death of her 13-month-old daughter, Kamryn Gerken.
The postponement of the trials came after the Ohio Supreme Court on Thursday sided with The Blade and temporarily placed on hold the judge's gag order that would have prevented journalists from promptly reporting on Ms. Schwenkmeyer's trial.
