4/24/2024 Marjorie Ann Reas - Obituaries

Marjorie Ann Reas
June 28, 1937 - March 29, 2024
Marjorie Ann Reas, came into this world on June 28, 1937, at DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda, New York. She was the second of three, with an older sister, Dorothy and a younger sister, Louise. Her parents, Henry, and Elsie Ellman, were caring and loving parents whose forebears came from Germany in the 1800s, settling in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area and worked in the various industries that had burgeoned with the completion of the Erie Canal.
A lifelong devout Lutheran, Marjorie attended St. Mark's Lutheran School in North Tonawanda, and then went to Lutheran High School of Cleveland, Ohio, a boarding school, from 1951 to 1955. She excelled as a student and loved sports and music, playing in the school marching band, learning to play the cello, oboe, and piano, and played softball and volleyball. Given her dad's passion for baseball, she was also a dedicated New York Yankees fan, and later in life, her musical talents expanded to include the dulcimer and participating in her church's hand bell orchestra.
After graduation, she enrolled in pre-med at Valparaiso University with dreams of becoming a veterinarian. However, career opportunities for women were still limited at the time, and dissuaded from pursuing that path, after two years she moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to study nursing at Lutheran Hospital Medical Center, and became a registered nurse in 1959, with a concentration in anesthesia and obstetrics. While in St. Louis, she became aware of medical missionary opportunities for young graduates in the health field, and through Lutheran Medical Missions, she joined a team of medical professionals in Papua New Guinea in 1959 operating at a small bush clinic as an anesthesiologist, midwife, health educator, and medical surgical nurse in the western highlands. Returning to to St. Louis and the Lutheran Hospital Medical Center she resumed working as an instructor in surgical nursing to the staff. Later, she began to work for Herman Reas, a pediatrician in St. Louis, whose wife, Mary Catherine had passed away in 1964, leaving her six children without a mother and Herman as a widower. The six children were Mary, Beth, Bill, Cathy, John, and Paul and ranged from ages 10 to 6 months. Initially asked to be a caregiver for the children, Herman and Marjorie fell in love and married in 1965.It was also then that the family moved to Massachusetts, and later back to Defiance, Ohio, where Herman started a medical practice. During that time, the 7th child, Talitha, was born in 1968, and Marjorie continued to work part-time as a pediatrics nurse at the Defiance Clinic while raising 7 young and rambunctious children along with the various pets that were adopted along the way. In 1971, the family moved to Toledo, Ohio, where Herman started a practice in family medicine, while Marjorie continued to raise her 7 children. She also continued to support the family as a staff nurse at the Toledo Hospital, assisted her husband in his family practice while completing a Bachelor of Science through St. Joseph's College of Maine, began her masters through the University of Toledo and then completed a master's in counseling in 1994 through Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan.
In 1988, as a champion for those less fortunate, she became a case manager at St. Paul's Community Center in downtown Toledo, working extensively with the homeless, mentally disabled and substance abusers, as well as coordinating nursing community and psychiatric rotations with students at the medical college. In 1991, she was brought on as a nurse to provide medical care at the Lucas County Corrections Center in Toledo, followed by joining the staff at St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo in adult psychiatric nursing and later as an alcohol and drug (ADC) counselor at Owens Community College until her retirement.
Throughout this time, she was also a tireless social activist in Northwest Ohio and a campaigner for peace. In addition, she travelled throughout Europe, Asia, as well as to Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya in Africa. She organized and participated in peace marches on the streets of Toledo, helped out those who had been incarcerated and were trying to rehabilitate with their return to society, and was recognized by her efforts in promoting social justice by the state of Ohio. On her 85th birthday in 2022, she received special recognition from the House of Representative in the 134th General Assembly of the State of Ohio for her lifelong commitment to peace and justice and community leadership.
She was also a passionate gardener and had the consummate green thumb. In Westmoreland, a neighborhood of large family homes in Toledo where she lived, she always had a large backyard garden where she grew tomatoes, green beans, squash, beets, cauliflower, peas, raspberries, blackberries, and cantaloupe. Her skills in canning fruits and vegetables using an antique stove top canner from her mother ensured her family always had plenty of food during the winter months that she enjoyed sharing with their neighbors.
Mom never forgot her first love, and that was for her seven children. She lived for her kids, and was able to watch them grow, develop and start families of their own. In addition to her 7 children, she is fondly remembered by her children's spouses; her 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; her older sister; and her nieces and nephews and their families.
