The 86th annual Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association Awards & Scholarship Banquet at the Premier kicked off Friday’s annual Charity Paper Sale.
More than 500 members of the volunteer organization will hawk their charity newspaper in the Toledo area to meet the $200,000 goal to provide immediate help when a school administrator, police officer, or neighbor reports a child in need of shoes, a coat, food, or medical attention. All donations go to the cause. In addition to children’s apparel, the association provides families with holiday food baskets, funds drug awareness programs, and awards $5,000 scholarships for college to high school seniors.
Emcee Jim Tichy, a life member, welcomed everyone. Chaplain Robert Lesinski said a prayer. After a delicious dinner and conversation, President Emilio Ramirez thanked everyone. Athletic presentations were presented by BCSN's Veronica Pinciotti, general manager, and Tom Cole, sports director. Scholarships were presented by Ron Shnider of The Blade. Sports awards — $1,000 each — were presented to Central Catholic High School football player Michael Warren and St. Ursula Academy volleyball player Elizabeth Coil.

The Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association volunteers won’t be on the street corners but watch for them in retail establishments including The Andersons, Franklin Park Mall, grocery stores, bowling centers, and credit unions. Or go to toledonewsboys.org or call 419-475-6764. Companies are welcome to join in the drive by permitting paper sales on their premises. Anyone can join the organization: There are news folks, doctors, lawyers, judges, businessmen, teachers, union workers, and anyone else who wants to help needy children.
Football is more than just the game. It’s a social gathering too. Sharon Gaber, University of Toledo president, entertained guests in the president’s suite during the Nov. 27 game against Western Michigan.
The American Advertising Federation Toledo hosted its second annual AdHOLE bean bag tournament at the Premier banquet hall.
Twenty-five two person teams vied for the title of the biggest AdHOLE, which was won by Brad Hughes and James Owen. Michael Seay won the raffle for a set of bean bag boards which reaped $50 for Making Strides of Northwest Ohio. Jodi Szczublewski won the 50/50 raffle. The event raised $900 and a heap of fun.
James Bond images and music set the scene for a Wine Affair presented by the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio at Parkway Place. The 24th annual event with a “007 License to Thrill” theme included wine tasting, edibles, and live and silent auctions of wine, art, and jewelry.
Among the about 330 party-goers was Dr. Allen Flickinger of Nephrology Consultants Northwest Ohio, who was the evening’s medical chairman.
More than $50,000 is the estimated amount raised.
