Pizza Hut has turned again to the tastemakers of Toledo to help them test eight new sauces and rubs for their WingStreet chicken wings before selling the product nationwide.
The pizza chain, owned by Yum! Brands Inc., debuted the new sauces last week in 26 Pizza Huts in the Toledo area, said Jared Drinkwater, a company vice president of marketing. Toledo is the only test site for the new flavors.
The new sauces offered include flavors such as spicy garlic, Hawaiian teriyaki, smoky mustard, and tequila lime.
The four new rubs are ranch, lemon pepper, cajun, and “signature,” which Mr. Drinkwater said was made of a “secret blend of spices.” A meal of eight wings costs $6.99.
This is not the first time that Toledo has acted as the testing grounds for new products from nationwide chains. Taco Bell used Toledo to test its new Quesalupa, a cross between a quesadilla and a chalupa, in February. In 2014, Pizza Hut tested its Skinny Slice Pizza in its restaurants across the city.
“Toledo was chosen because we know that if Toledoans love it, America will love it,” said Mr. Drinkwater.
The wing flavors are not the only new product from Pizza Hut. The new Hot Dog Bites Pizza will appear in Pizza Hut’s 6,300 domestic restaurants starting June 18. The item features 28 “premium hot dog bites,” which are baked into the crust and meant to be pulled off and dipped in mustard.
There’s also a change in packaging for the chicken wings. The new “bowl style” is meant to keep the wings hotter for a longer period of time.
Pizza Hut will advertise both the packaging and the new flavors in a series of television ads. Tasters will be able to share their thoughts via an online survey on WingStreet Feedback.com.
Testing in Toledo will conclude at the end of June.
Mr. Drinkwater said Pizza Hut expects to sell the eight new flavors in stores nationwide before the end of the year, although no firm date has been set.
