SANDUSKY -- Cedar Fair LP expects to test a virtual reality component on one of its roller coasters later this year, continuing the company’s movement toward pairing technology with traditional thrill rides.
The Sandusky-based amusement park operator announced the plan today during a conference call to discuss its second-quarter earnings.
Officials stressed virtual reality is only a test at this time, but they say it gives a flavor of where the company is looking to go in the future. The company has already rolled out interactive dark rides at two parks and industry observers expect that more are likely on the way.
The company didn’t say which park or coaster it was looking at for the virtual reality test.
So far this year, Cedar Fair said attendance is up 3 percent across its various parks, while in park-spending is up 2 percent.
In the year’s second quarter, Cedar Fair reported net revenues of $377.4 million, up from $363 million in the same period last year. Net income rose to $57.6 million from $43.9 million last year.
